What surprising, fascinating stuff can you tell us about the origin, drafting, and/or final version of “Harvesting Her Heart after the Accident”?

I wrote this poem after the death of my dear friend and colleague, Stephanie Vafiadis. In a supreme act of generosity and love, as was her way in life, her vital organs were offered for donation. This poem is a reflection of the moment her heart was harvested in the operating room. She was 33 years old.
